Staff Profile - Marc Valdez
■ Professional Profile Dr. Valdez is an Associate Specialist and air quality meteorologist at Sierra Research responsible for air quality and dispersion modeling when needed for Title V and Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permits, as well as for Environmental Impact Reports and other permitting work. He has conducted modeling for a variety of sources and facilities, including power plants, quarries, and other facilities; and is well versed in the use of the U.S. EPA series of Gaussian dispersion models (SCREEN3, ISCST3, RTDM, CTSCREEN, AERMOD, CALPUFF). Other models used and altered as required for special purposes include SHORTZ, FDM, and PAL for non-point sources; ISCST3 for visual steam plumes, and SCREEN3 for extra shoreline fumigation. He has also conducted chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling, ozone transport studies using WIND-2D and EKMA, and Diesel particulate dispersion modeling for risk assessment analyses; interpreted Urban Airshed Modeling (UAM) results; performed intersection modeling for carbon monoxide impacts using CAL3QHC; and performed regional haze and plume blight modeling (using PLUVUE-II), and VISCREEN modeling. Dr. Valdez has been working in the field of air quality and atmospheric modeling since 1980. Prior to joining Sierra in 1990, he was an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Utah. Dr. Valdez has a B.S. degree in Physics and History from the University of New Mexico, and a M.S. degree and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Arizona.
