Staff Profile - Eric Walther
■ Professional Profile
A Principal Scientist at Sierra Research, Dr. Walther’s responsibilities include stationary source project management and technical and strategy analysis in all aspects of air quality planning and strategy development; project licensing; and impact analysis. Dr. Walther supervises the preparation of control technology assessments, environmental impact reports, health risk assessments, and permit applications for numerous industrial projects throughout the United States. Work at Sierra has included the performance of health risk assessments for the potential cancer risk and non-cancer chronic and acute health hazards from development projects near roadways. He has been the lead air quality scientist for the development of air quality impact analyses and health risk assessments for power plants, landfills, mining projects, rail yards, hospital expansions, and an LNG import terminal. During his career, he has conducted work not only for numerous industries, but also for the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, U.S. EPA, U.S. National Park Service, and the United Nations. Dr. Walther has been working in the field of air pollution control since 1970. Prior to joining Sierra in 2005, Dr. Walther was a vice president for air quality services at TRC, where he developed and directed that firm’s southern California air quality and health risk assessment program. Dr. Walther has a B.E.P. degree in Engineering Physics from Cornell University, and a M.S. degree and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the State University of New York, Albany. He is also accredited by the California Air Resources Board as a Lead Verifier under the Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting program, with general and sector-specific accreditations in the Refinery and Power Entities sectors.
